"Oak Angel Wing Sculpture"

There is something timeless about the beauty of a feather. It represents strength and grace in equal measure, yet remains light enough to be carried by the wind. My latest wooden sculpture, the Oak Angel Wing, was created to capture that balance, combining the warmth of natural oak with the simplicity of contemporary design.

Inspired by Nature

Every carving begins with a simple idea, but the wood always has its own story to tell. The flowing grain of the oak became part of the design, adding movement through the feathers and ensuring that no two sculptures could ever be exactly the same.

Rather than creating a traditional wall carving, I wanted this piece to stand freely, allowing it to be appreciated from every angle. The result is a sculpture that changes character as you move around it.

The Harmony of Materials

The beauty of this piece comes from the contrast between carefully carved oak and naturally weathered timber.

The Sculpture: Carved from solid oak and detailed on both sides, allowing the wing to be displayed from any direction.

The Support: A stainless steel rod creates the illusion that the wing is floating, adding lightness while providing strength and stability.

The Base: The wing is mounted on a hand-selected weathered oak block. Every crack, knot and weathered mark has been left untouched, celebrating the character that only time can create.

Designed to Be Seen

Unlike a wall-mounted carving, this sculpture invites you to walk around it. The changing light reveals new details across the carved feathers, while the natural grain of the oak gives each wing its own individual character.

Whether displayed in a hallway, on a console table or as a focal point in a living space, it has been designed to create a quiet sense of movement and balance.

Crafted on the Isle of Arran

Created here in my workshop on the Isle of Arran, this sculpture reflects my approach to making. Every stage, from the initial design through to carving, sanding and finishing, is completed with care and attention to detail.

The Oak Angel Wing is currently in its final stages and will soon be joining my collection of handcrafted wooden sculptures.
