Oak Celtic Cross Sculpture
There is something enduring about the Celtic Cross. For centuries it has stood as a symbol of faith, heritage and craftsmanship, its intricate knotwork reminding us that every journey is connected. My latest sculpture takes inspiration from that tradition, combining timeless Celtic design with the warmth and character of natural oak.
Inspired by Tradition
Every Celtic Cross has its own story, and this piece was created with simplicity and balance in mind. Rather than reproducing an ancient monument, I wanted to create a contemporary sculpture that respected traditional Celtic design while allowing the beauty of the oak to become part of the finished piece.
The flowing knotwork has been carefully carved to create depth and shadow, allowing the design to change as the light moves across its surface.
The Harmony of Materials
The strength of this sculpture comes from the contrast between natural oak, charred timber and polished stainless steel.
The Sculpture: Carved from solid oak, with traditional Celtic knotwork that celebrates the endless flowing patterns found throughout Celtic art.
The Support: A stainless steel rod gently lifts the cross above its base, creating the impression that it is quietly suspended in space.
The Base: The cross is mounted on a hand-finished charred oak plinth. The deep black finish provides a striking contrast to the warm tones of the oak, allowing the carving to become the focal point.
Designed for Modern Living
Although inspired by centuries of Celtic tradition, this sculpture has been created with a contemporary feel. The clean lines and floating design allow it to sit comfortably within both modern and traditional interiors, while its durable finish also makes it suitable for outdoor display in a sheltered garden setting.
Whether displayed as a personal statement, a celebration of heritage, or simply as a beautifully crafted sculpture, it has been designed to be appreciated for both its form and its craftsmanship.
Crafted on the Isle of Arran
Created here in my workshop on the Isle of Arran, every stage of the process has been completed by hand, from the initial design through to carving, sanding and finishing. Protected with three coats of Polyvine Dead Flat varnish, the sculpture has been finished to preserve the natural beauty of the oak while providing lasting protection.
The Oak Celtic Cross Sculpture is now entering its final stages and will soon be joining my collection of handcrafted wooden sculptures.
