Title: The Creation of a Stunning Fused Glass Wave with Kiln Carving and Turquoise Blue Accents
As an artist, every fused glass piece I create has its own story, and my recent project, a kiln-carved wave infused with vibrant turquoise blue, is no exception. This piece was an exploration of texture, color, and craftsmanship that truly brought the essence of the ocean to life.
The Vision
The inspiration for this piece came from the ever-changing waves along the Isle of Arran’s coastline. I wanted to capture the fluid movement of the sea, the play of light on water, and the serenity that turquoise blue embodies. Adding an oak block as a base was a deliberate choice, grounding the glass in natural warmth and giving the piece an earthy connection to its surroundings.
The Process
Kiln Carving:
Kiln carving is a technique that allows intricate designs to emerge in the glass. For this piece, I began by creating a wave pattern on fiber paper, carefully cutting and shaping it to ensure it would translate well onto the glass. This step required precision and patience, as the details of the carving would ultimately define the texture of the wave.Adding Turquoise Blue:
To bring the wave to life, I selected a vibrant turquoise blue glass, layering it strategically to create depth and dimension. The blue not only captures the essence of water but also interacts beautifully with light, creating dynamic reflections that change depending on the viewer’s perspective.Firing the Glass:
The piece was then placed in the kiln for firing. Watching the transformation in the kiln is always a magical experience, as the glass softens and takes on the contours of the carved pattern. Once cooled, the texture of the wave was fully realized, with the turquoise blue flowing seamlessly across its surface.Adding the Oak Base:
To complete the piece, I mounted the glass on a handcrafted oak block. The natural grain of the wood contrasts beautifully with the sleek, flowing glass, creating a harmonious balance. The oak’s warmth complements the cool tones of the turquoise, making the wave feel both dynamic and grounded.
The Final Piece
The finished wave is a blend of artistry and technique, capturing the beauty of the sea and the tranquility it brings. The kiln carving gives the glass an organic, tactile quality, while the turquoise blue adds vibrancy and life. Mounted on the oak block, the piece stands as a testament to the harmony between glass and wood, art and nature.
Why This Piece Matters
This wave sculpture is more than just a decorative item; it’s a reflection of the Isle of Arran’s natural beauty and my passion for fused glass artistry. Each time I look at it, I’m reminded of the power and elegance of the ocean, and I hope it brings the same sense of peace and inspiration to those who see it.
